Art Immersion - Berlin
May 27 - June 14, 2022
Instructor Fee: $1400 per student
*The instructor fee does not include travel, lodging, food, muse
The focus of Art Immersion - Berlin will be to explore the layers of art practices represented by German Painters, specifically focusing on artwork created from the 1920’s - 1950’s. We will also explore Berlin’s world class collections of ancient art at Museum Island, including Nefertiti’s bust and the Gates of Ishtar. There will also be an extensive exploration of the most acclaimed artists throughout art history at the Gemäldegalerie, holding the world’s leading collection of European paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Students will also visit Berlin’s incredible street art scene, which will include a visit to Berlin’s East Side Gallery, a mile-long stretch of the Berlin Wall, the canvas of many iconic murals.
All students will develop a sketchbook to be used for assignments throughout our two-week adventure. After, or during each museum visit, students will be guided through a specific assignment including drawing from the figure, painting en plein air (outdoors), or taking reference photos.
As a student, your adventures will include private lectures by museum curators and art historians, painting in the gardens of Charlottenburg Palace, a sunset painting session of ballroom dancers near the Bode Museum, sketching at the famous Zoo Berlin created in 1844, drawing from sculptures and paintings at Europe’s most famous museums, while creating photo references for a final painting assignment. Art Immersion-Berlin will inspire your own studies, practice, and growth as a visual artist.
The theme of this year’s Art Immersion is “Reflection”. Reflection, or contemplation, is a challenge all artists face while creating personal artwork. The German artists whose works we will focus on include: Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Felix Nussbaum, and Rudolf Schlichter. These artists were labelled as “Degenerate Artists”, and included German Modernist, Jewish, and dissident artists. They were often banned from teaching, exhibiting, and painting. Their powerful works have inspired generations of artists worldwide in style, technique, and use of personal narrative.
Reflection also refers to the many glass buildings we will see on the eastern side of Berlin. Students will be assigned to photograph reflections in glass throughout their journey to use as photo reference materials for their final paintings, which will be exhibited in a group exhibition in Houston.
There will be several days noted on the itinerary for you to relax, move at your own pace, explore and soak in the environment of the bustling artistic city of Berlin.
